It is said that of the individuals who abuse alcohol, thirty seven percent of them suffer from some emotional problem. It is also said that of the individuals who abuse drugs, fifty three percent of them suffer from some emotional issue. This is quite an alarming figure when you think about it. Dual diagnosis treatment centers have to be equipped to handle this huge problem that is facing society. Dual diagnosis is a combination of mental illness and a substance abuse problem. It is also a substance abuse problem with a personality issue. It could be a substance abuse issue, personality issue along with a mental disorder that requires psychiatric assistance. The person suffering from such complex problems will oftentimes have depressed thoughts, hallucination, phobias and additional symptoms related to the withdrawal of substance abuse. Included in dual diagnosis are substance abuse, mental illness and physical ailments. The physical ailments may result from the misuse of the substance.

A person who is experiencing depression and anxiety is prone to have a desire for something that will give them an easy way out. Nine times out of ten, they will opt for drugs or alcohol. When it becomes an addiction, the problem grows bigger and it becomes more difficult to treat. This is why dual diagnosis treatment centers are being implemented to help those who don?t even have an idea what is going on in their minds and bodies.

Anyone that suffers from any form of mental illness will usually abuse drugs and alcohol for the reason that those who don?t have a mental illness do. The effect is the same and treatment is necessary. It is certainly a sensitive issue and should be treated that way. It is essential for the family to provide support and encouragement to their loved one throughout the process.

Treatment for someone who has co-occurring disorders must receive treatment that is specialized. This is not the usual addiction problem, but another dimension is added to make it more complicated. Instruction, information and understanding are also crucial when it comes to dual diagnosis. In dual diagnosis treatment centers, all of this will be discussed with the patient and with family members.

The focus of treatment is to get the person fully operational and well. So when the individual is accepted into treatment, the objective is to integrate treatment to include both problems. The professional should identify the issues related to the addiction and find the reason for the initial disorder. The addict will be instrumental in providing this information to the therapist because that is the only way that the proper treatment will be possible.
