Bulls pull away in 4th to beat Clippers 114-101 (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Derrick Rose had 29 points and 16 assists, and the Chicago Bulls pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 114-101 Friday night.

Luol Deng and Joakim Noah added 19 points apiece and Richard Hamilton had 16 for the Bulls against their former coach, Vinny Del Negro.

Blake Griffin had 34 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers, who kept it close most of the way coming off a 25-point loss at San Antonio. Caron Butler added 16 points and Chris Paul had 15 points and 14 assists in his matchup against Rose, the NBA's MVP last season.

The Clippers, who outshot the Bulls and outscored them in the paint, got within three early in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by rookie Trey Thompkins.

Then the Bulls took over.

Ronnie Brewer hit a 3-pointer and made two free throws before Rose made two free throws, then Deng hit a 3-pointer from in front of the Clippers' bench to give Chicago its largest lead of the game, 97-84.

Griffin singlehandedly fueled the Clippers' offense with eight straight points that included a ferocious dunk in which he walked away with his fists clenched and his teeth gritted. Still, it left his team trailing by eight points with less than five minutes to play.

The Bulls effectively used 3-pointers to keep the Clippers at bay in the fourth, when they hit four, including two by Rose.

Chicago moved out to a seven-point lead in the third quarter, when the Clippers' DeAndre Jordan picked up his fourth foul. He finished with 10 points.

Mo Williams and Butler hit consecutive 3-pointers as part of a 13-6 run that helped the Clippers tie the game at 77. But the Bulls answered with six straight points while the Clippers missed their final five shots to lead 83-77 going into the fourth. Deng had 10 points in the quarter.

The Bulls closed on a 10-2 run, including four straight by Noah, to lead 57-52 at halftime. The first two quarters were mostly back and forth, with the Clippers leading by eight in the first 12 minutes.

Griffin and Paul took to the court before tipoff to thank the fans for their support, with Griffin saying, "We're going to try to make this a season you won't forget."

Los Angeles opened with a bang, making its first six shots, with Paul feeding Griffin for a two-handed dunk on the Clippers' first basket. Jordan had the crowd roaring with his one-handed dunk off a ball tossed toward the basket by Butler.

NOTES: The Bulls finished their season-opening road trip with a 3-1 mark. ... The Clippers fell to 5-8 in home openers at Staples Center. ... Rose heard chants of "MVP" when he was at the free throw line. ... Paul has yet to beat Rose in five career games. His previous four losses came when Paul played for New Orleans. ... Clippers PA announcer David Courtney introduced Williams as Chauncey Billups during pregame intros. Billups was the first player introduced and he sat out with a sore right groin. ... Boxer Floyd Mayweather attended the game.

San Pedro woman killed walking home from church on Christmas Eve

Eva Tice

| POLICE NEWS | BLOG: SOUTH BAY CRIME, COURT NEWS | FACEBOOK

Eva Tice had looked forward to Christmas this year. A family adopted the disabled 60-year-old woman and her roommate, providing her a tree that sat decorated atop a table in their San Pedro apartment.

"She was very excited for Christmas," Los Angeles police Detective Patty Batts said. "She hadn't had a Christmas tree for many years. ... She was very excited about a small little duck hanging on the

tree. She thought it was real pretty."

Tice, who had a mental capacity that varied from a 6-year-old girl to a young woman, had lived a difficult life. She became a ward of the state as a young child when her parents were killed in a car wreck.

Without family to care for her, social workers and caregivers took over, helping Tice to live independently. She was married for many years to another mentally disabled man.

He died six months ago, about the time she moved into her latest apartment on 12th Street, not far from her beloved church, Hope Chapel, where she recently was baptised.

"She was an usher at the church," Batts said. "She really wanted to help. She would always come to the Friday dinners, the

Saturday garage sales. She would always come to Sunday services."

And then there was Christmas.

"She was excited about the Christmas season," a pastor said. "She was even more joyful than usual. She had a great smile on her face, looked very rested and was excited to celebrate Christmas."

Her Bible in hand, Tice walked to Hope Chapel for the 6 p.m. Christmas Eve service on Saturday.

"She was very kind, enjoyed interacting with people and and enjoyed serving

God," the pastor said.

The service ended about 7 p.m. Tice, who had recovered from a recently broken hip, headed home.

Police are not sure what happened next. Residents who heard moaning found Tice on the sidewalk on Pacific Avenue, covered with blood, her Bible at her side.

Batts said detectives know she walked along Pacific from 9th Street. Someone assaulted her between 11th and 12th streets.

Witnesses saw a man running away.

The assailant stabbed Tice multiple times, Batts said. She died at a hospital.

Detectives suspect the motive was robbery, but do not know if he took anything.

"It's Christmas Eve," Batts said. "She's coming from a church service carrying her Bible. She is mentally disabled, physically disabled, all of 4-foot-11 and somebody assaults her. For what? I don't know at this time. All they had to do is just take it from her."

The crime has shaken congregants at her church, including a female pastor, who did not want her name published for fear of retaliation from a killer nobody knows.

"She attended church every week," the pastor said. "She was a sweet gal."

A worship leader mentioned her death during Christmas services on Sunday, but no one knew the circumstances.

"We are very disappointed that this has happened," the pastor said. "We hope that the person is found as quick as possible."

Detectives who have little to go on believe somebody must have seen something that can help them find a something.

"We need the public's help," Batts said. "When we watch video from the surrounding businesses, we can see heavy vehicle traffic in both directions. We can see pedestrian traffic."

A busy bar is located at 11th Street and Pacific.

Batts asked anyone with information to call her at 310-726-7889 or Detective David Alvarez at 310-726-7879.

"I know people saw things," the detective said.

R.I.P. Tarzan's Pal Cheetah

Hulton Archive/Getty Images

One of the most famous animal actors in Hollywood history is gone.

Cheetah, the chimpanzee sidekick from Tarzan films, died of kidney failure over the weekend at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, Florida. The Tampa Tribune reports that he was roughly 80 years old.

PHOTOS: It's a Zoo This Season - 23 Awards Contenders Featuring Animals

Hardly the only primate to take on the iconic role, Cheetah probably received the most exposure. He appeared in the 1932-1934 installments of the franchise, at the beginning of its heyday when Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller took over the title role.

In addition to having the distinction of being famous, Cheetah's longevity was one of his greatest accomplishments. Suncoast outreach director Debbie Cobb noted that chimpanzees generally live between 35 to 45 years in captivity, and only 25 to 35 years in the wild.

She also spoke highly of his character.

"He was very compassionate," Cobb told the Tampa Tribune. "He could tell if I was having a good day or a bad day. He was always trying to get me to laugh if he thought I was having a bad day. He was very in tune to human feelings."

PHOTOS: Oscar Dog Showdown - Who's Cutest?

Cheetah moved to the sanctuary around 1960, where he remained the most famous of its primate residents until his death. His interests included finger-painting, watching football and nondenominational Christian music.

Among Cheetah's Tarzan features were Tarzan and His Mate and Tarzan the Ape Man, where he starred alongside Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan, who played "Jane."

O?Sullivan?s daughter, actress Mia Farrow, reacted to Cheetah's passing on her Twitter account, painting a less flattering portrait than Cobb.

"My mom, Tarzan's Jane, referred to Cheetah-the-chimp as 'that bastard,'" she wrote, "saying he bit her at every opportunity."

'Hunger Games' Suspense Kicked Into High Gear In 2011

The film might not hit theaters until next year, but casting announcements and exclusive interviews got fans worked up for March release.

For the millions of fans who have been eagerly awaiting a film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-seller "The Hunger Games," 2011 gave them even more to be eager about as details trickled out about the movie, which is due in March.

We at MTV News have been as caught up in the frenzy as everyone else. And along the way, we've been able to speak with the major players involved in the "Games," gleaning the juiciest details from the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson.

Back in January, before casting was solidified, Hemsworth told MTV News he'd read the script and that he could actually see himself in the role of Peeta. After Hemsworth won the role of Gale instead, we chatted up his older brother and fellow actor Chris Hemsworth, who revealed that he helped Liam prep for his big audition by reading the role of Katniss. "I did. Swear to God," he said. "I read that. Put my girly American accent on."

In May, we had our first "Hunger Games"-centricchat with Jennifer Lawrence. She discussed fans' initial protests over her blond hair, which quieted after she dyed it, along with the intense hours of archery training she went through to become as convincingly handy with a bow and arrow as Katniss is.

"It's lots of training, but the training is actually really fun," she said. "I've done archery for about six weeks, rock climbing, tree climbing and combat and running and vaulting," she said. "Also yoga and things like that to stay cat-like."

We also caught up with some of the film's supporting actors. Lenny Kravitz, who is ready to further prove his acting chops in the role of sympathetic District 12 stylist Cinna, said he's doing his homework by immersing himself in all Collins' books. Elizabeth Banks was a bit more cagey in revealing any details about her transformation into pink-haired, type-A Effie Trinket, but she did admit that she and co-star Woody Harrelson have chemistry.

Harrelson, who plays alcoholic Hunger Games survivor Haymitch Abernathy, praised Lawrence's portrayal of Katniss and revealed that his character's hairstyle was inspired by his own brother. "I was like, 'OK, let's get a wig. Let's do the Brett Harrelson hair,' " he said of the long and slightly shaggy style. "It's kind of cool. I really liked the look. It's a fun character, and I think it's going to be a good movie."

Fellow supporting player Stanley Tucci, a.k.a. the blue-haired Caesar Flickerman, echoed Harrelson's sentiments about Lawrence's performance. "She was amazing," he said. "They were all amazing. She's just so good and so mature at such a young age. It was really fun. Really fun. And [director] Gary Ross, he's great."

We didn't have to take Tucci's word for it, as we also sat down with Ross for an exclusive interview surrounding our debut of the "Games" teaser trailer back in August. The "Seabiscuit" and "Pleasantville" helmer took us through his detailed plans for the film and the challenges of filming.

And we finally stole a few moments with Peeta Mellark himself, Josh Hutcherson, who took us through his grueling audition process and the anxious wait for the news of his casting, why he was "so right" for Peeta and his excitement for the fans to see the finished product.

"It's exciting to hear people are that interested in something you're doing, so it's a little nerve-racking, but I'm onboard," he said. "The fans for 'The Hunger Games,' they're die-hard. They're the best fans in the world, so I'm really excited for them to see the movie."

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

Rabbi?s rounds include visits with college kids

Rabbi Cliff Kulwin prepares to set out on another one of his college circuits.+ enlarge image

Rabbi Cliff Kulwin prepares to set out on another one of his college circuits.

+ more images

Aliza Roth ? left, with a friend and Bucky, the University of Wisconsin mascot ? said the visits from Rabbi Cliff Kulwin made her feel at home while still on campus.

Every year, David Spiro, a senior at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, looks forward to having dinner there with Rabbi Clifford Kulwin of Temple B?nai Abraham in Livingston, where Spiro grew up and celebrated becoming a bar mitzva.

?We always go the Cottage Inn, and he goes around the table and asks each individual, ?What are you doing in school?? and then we talk about contemporary news events,? said Spiro. ?He always tries to get a gauge on the campus and?how the younger generation perceives what?s going on in the world.?

Spiro and his fellow Wolverines aren?t the only college kids to get a visit from the rabbi. Every year, Kulwin visits children of temple members at colleges with a critical mass of Jewish kids, including Indiana University, University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana, Penn State, Syracuse, Bucknell, Rutgers, and Princeton.

This year, he will visit the University of Maryland and University of Delaware for the first time.

He also went to the University of California-Berkeley this year ? and for just one student. Congregants forgave the exception: he visited his own son.

Kulwin said he embarks on his travels to maintain ties with students at an age where they are often not engaging with the Jewish world.

?Because I?m able to maintain ties over the course of the year, there?s a different dynamic,? he said in a phone interview shortly after returning from a Midwest jaunt that included the University of Wisconsin in Madison. ?Students often e-mail me about paper topics in Jewish studies or for different kinds of advice. I can think of a couple of situations where a kid was going through something particularly challenging and turned to me in a way they otherwise might not have. And I get to spend time encouraging students to go on Birthright Israel and study abroad in Israel.?

He said, ?The mere fact that I?m there is Jewish reinforcement.?

He finds the conversations with students ?fascinating.?

?What?s happening on campus is not part of my day-to-day life, though it is important to the Jewish community and our families,? said Kulwin. ?I?m interested in the political issues that present themselves to our kids and what concerns they have, from a Jewish point of view or any other.?

Some schools can be more politically charged than others around issues like Israel. Michigan, with its large Arab-American population from the Detroit suburbs, for example, has a long history of political engagement.

Kulwin logs 6,000-8,000 driving and flying miles each year in visits to about a dozen schools. The cost comes from the synagogue?s annual budget.

?All his children?

Parents are thrilled by his visits.

Susy Spiro, David?s mother, said, ?What rabbi goes to colleges and takes kids out to dinner? It just shows the kids what a close community we have, and they know the rabbi cares enough to take time from his busy schedule to spend time with them.?

Lori Schlanger of Short Hills was at first shocked to learn about the visits and her children?s interest (she has three, the youngest two at the University of Michigan, the eldest a recent graduate).

?We weren?t all that involved ? we are the kind of Jews who only went for the High Holy Days,? she said. ?But my kids jumped at the chance to have dinner with the rabbi. Now my kids feel very close to him. And I love the fact they are connecting with somebody Jewish.?

?It?s so important for our kids during these years that they are not so in touch with the temple and with Judaism; this keeps them in touch,? said Nurit Gans, whose son, Asaf, attends Penn State.

Aliza Roth, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin, had dinner with Kulwin on his recent trip. Her mother, Ginny, also appreciates what it does for the parents. ?It means the world to us and to our kids. At a time when parents are not that involved in synagogue life, he e-mails them about his visit to their children, and it keeps them connected.?

Students like the visits from home.

Mara Schlanger, a University of Michigan student, said she didn?t know what to expect the first time she joined Kulwin at the Cottage Inn. She didn?t know many of the other TBA kids attending the school and hadn?t spent much time with the rabbi recently. ?Dinner turned out to be a comforting taste of home,? she said. ?I got the same sense of relief seeing him as I would my parents, friends, or anyone I was close with in New Jersey. It was comforting knowing that I was in the presence of someone that I?ve had a relationship with since childhood.?

She also described how the rabbi manages to put the students at ease, in part by telling the waitress, ?to bring us anything we wanted, because we were ?all his children,?? she said. ?Other diners must have thought we were celebrating a birthday because of the high levels of spirit and energy at the table,? said Schlanger. ?It was amazing how interested Rabbi Kulwin was in all of our lives ? conversations ranged from dorm life, to classes, to academic organizations, to the social scene, sports, food, friends ? you name it.

?Of course, our relationship to Judaism on campus was brought up, but Rabbi Kulwin never made the conversation about what we should or shouldn?t be doing, rather how or if we were integrating it into our college life.?

Aliza Roth acknowledged the lasting impact of the visits.

?At this age, being in college, away from the temple and religion as a whole, it?s sometimes hard to want to go back to services,? she said. ?But when he comes, it?s a little reminder, and maybe I?ll stop by when I come home.?

The whole endeavor came about through happenstance, when Kulwin?s father moved from Florida to Ann Arbor to be with Kulwin?s sister. When the rabbi visited the first time about 13 years ago, he took a group of TBA kids out to dinner. After a few years of such visits, he said, ?I thought, ?Gee I really ought to do this at other schools, too.??

He gets as much as he gives, he said. Born and raised in Champaign, Ill., he misses the fabric of a university town.

?You?re just exposed to things there that you aren?t elsewhere.? And, he added, ?It?s fun.?

Rolling Meadows teen's killing in Mexico sends dread through Mexican community

In a small town in western Mexico, Jazmin Reyes, 16, waited for her new boyfriend from the United States. She and Alexis Marron had been emailing each other for months, but when they finally met a few weeks ago, she said it was "love at first sight."

Marron, 18, a Rolling Meadows High School senior, had worked all summer so he could afford to visit relatives and see Reyes outside Guadalajara over Christmas. On Friday, he was driving with two friends to exchange Christmas gifts with her. He never made it.

Saturday morning, the charred remains of Marron and his two friends were found outside a remote ranch, in the trunk of a car that had been burned to a shell. Investigators could not explain what had happened. Relatives and friends were shocked by the seemingly random killing and could only blame it on the spreading scourge of violent crime in Mexico.

"We don't know what happened," Reyes said Tuesday. "I never expected this."

Such unthinkable crimes have sparked anxiety among some Mexican immigrants in the Chicago area, who fear they may never be able to return to their native country, even to visit.

Like many residents in the Coach Light Condominiums in Rolling Meadows, Marron's family came to the U.S. in the 1990s, friends said, following others from the small town of Quiringuicharo, some 90 miles southeast of Guadalajara in the state of Michoacan.

When they heard the terrible news, Marron's neighbors took up donations to help his grieving parents fly back to Mexico on Sunday to claim their son's remains. Unlit Christmas lights hung in the window of the family's condominium.

The Marrons usually returned to their native town to visit family and friends each Christmas. This year they couldn't afford to make the trip. But Alexis Marron was able to save enough money for the trip through his summer job as a runner at Mr. D's Sports Bar at Arlington Park, relatives said. On Dec. 3, he flew to Quiringuicharo to stay with his grandmother.

When he disappeared Friday, relatives made frantic phone calls in an effort to find him. Some gathered in the town square hoping for news.

By 7 a.m. Saturday, the victims' bodies were found in the nearby town of Ixtlan de los Hervores.

The other victims were identified by the Michoacan attorney general as Juan Pedro Estrada Osegueda and Raul Tellez Vazquez, 21, both of Quiringuicharo, though Tellez was originally from Los Angeles. They were found in a black 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis that belonged to Estrada, who was 24, according to Mexican news reports.

The town where the bodies were found is known for its hot springs but is far from the beaches that attract most of Mexico's tourists. The state of Michoacan has seen growing violence from drug cartels that has spread from near the country's border with the U.S.

Marron's uncle, Martin Zendejas, said through an interpreter that the family was in disbelief.

"We don't know what happened. He was a good boy, a good student, no drugs. He didn't run with gangs," said Zendejas, who speculated that Marron was robbed or mistaken for a drug trafficker.

Though the family had never felt in danger during previous visits to the area, the growing crime problem has prompted the increased presence of soldiers in the last couple of years, Zendejas said. He questioned why Mexican authorities seem unable to stop the violence. Though he still has a house in Quiringuicharo, he added, "I won't go back until they can control it."

Marron had competed in football and gymnastics at Rolling Meadows and had applied to several colleges, relatives said.

Daniela Zendejas said she was so close to her cousin that she considered Marron a brother. They often traveled together to Rolling Meadows High, where she is also a senior.

"He was a very nice kid," she said. "He was smiling all day. He was always positive, thinking of his family. He loved his nieces."

She added that she's now scared to go back to Mexico.

Yolanda Ibanez, a neighbor of the Marrons, said Alexis Marron was friendly and respectful, always holding the door for her. She said the family attended St. Colette Church in Rolling Meadows.

Marron had an American passport, and friends said he was a U.S. citizen.

His classmates set up a Facebook page in his memory, and they plan a memorial for him at his locker when school resumes Tuesday. They planned to wear red, his trademark color.

Lydia Antonio, spokeswoman for the Embassy of Mexico in Washington, said she could not comment on the homicide investigation. "We profoundly lament and are saddened by this incident, and stand by Alexis' family and loved ones over their loss," she said.

Around 2007, lurid details of Mexican drug violence scared off many Americans, and reports of police corruption, mass killings and death squads helped spur a nose dive in tourism. But some in the travel industry say the number of visitors is now rising as Americans understand the violence is generally concentrated away from top tourist destinations.

"Are there some people not traveling to Mexico? Yeah. But my perception is the vast majority of people are smart enough to be able to discern reality," said Catherine Banks, vice president of Legacy Travel in Chicago. "There are (crimes) that happen in Chicago too. It doesn't mean Chicago is a bad place to travel to."

Still, the U.S. State Department cautions tourists about traveling in Mexico, in particular to border states and Michoacan ? areas hit hard by drug violence.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank

(AP) ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" the group taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

It soon became clear that proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, and that the main threat was posed to individual employees.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with the names, addresses and account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the "A''s," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

It also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Stratfor said in an email to members that it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

"We have reason to believe that the names of our corporate subscribers have been posted on other web sites," said the email, passed on to The Associated Press by subscribers. "We are diligently investigating the extent to which subscriber information may have been obtained."

The email, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman, said the company is "working closely with law enforcement to identify who is behind the breach."

"Stratfor's relationship with its members and, in particular, the confidentiality of their subscriber information, are very important to Stratfor and me," Friedman wrote.

Repeated calls to Stratfor went unanswered Sunday and an answering machine thanked callers for contacting the "No. 1 source for global intelligence." Stratfor's website was down, with a banner saying "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told the AP in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think 'Why me?' I am not rich."

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" news ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as others in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

One billion holiday wishes

As a new year dawns, 1 billion people worldwide face difficult challenges. But hundreds of organizations are working tirelessly to help.

The holidays are a time for putting others before yourself. And with the recent announcement that the world?s population has surpassed 7 billion, there are a lot more "others" to consider this year.

Nearly 1 billion people in the world are hungry, for example, while almost the same number are illiterate, making it hard for them to earn a living or move out of poverty.

One billion people ? many of them children ? have micronutrient deficiencies, decreasing their ability to learn and live productive lives.

?IN PICTURES: Food security in Africa

But there are hundreds and hundreds of organizations working tirelessly in communities at home and abroad to fix these problems.

One billion hungry

Although the number of undernourished people worldwide has decreased since 2009, nearly 1 billion people go to bed hungry each night. This number is unacceptably high. Malnutrition contributes to the death of half a billion children under the age of five every year, and in Africa alone, one child dies every six seconds from hunger.

But organizations such as the World Food Programme are using home-grown school feeding (HGSF) initiatives to alleviate hunger and poverty. HGSF programs in Brazil, India, Thailand, Kenya, and other countries work to connect local producers with schools, helping to provide children with nutritious and fresh food while providing farmers with a stable source of income.

One billion tons of food wasted

Roughly 1.3 billion tons of food ? a third of the total food produced for human consumption ? is lost or wasted each year. Within the United States, food retailers, services, and households waste approximately 40 million tons of food each year ? an amount that has been estimated to be enough to feed the close to 1 billion hungry people.

Thankfully, organizations around the world are working to educate people on the importance of preserving food. In New York City, City Harvest collects surplus food from food providers and distributes it to over 600 shelters and other agencies.

And in West Africa, farmers are using the power of the sun to dehydrate fruits such as mangoes and bananas. Experts estimate that, with nearly all of their moisture removed, the fruits? nutrients are retained for up to six months, allowing farmers to save the 100,000 tons of mangoes that go to waste each year.?

One billion micronutrient deficient?

Nearly 1 billion people suffer from micro-nutrient deficiencies, including lack of vitamin A, iron, and iodine. Between a quarter of a billion to half a billion children with vitamin A deficiencies become blind every year, and half of these children die within 12 months of losing their sight.

These problems could be fixed by ensuring access to nutritious foods. Organizations such as AVRDC ? The World Vegetable Center and the Developing Innovations in School cultivation (Project DISC) have been working to combat this problem.

Libya to include rebels in military from January

Libya will include thousands of former rebels who helped topple Muammar Gaddafi in its armed forces from January, the defense minister said on Sunday, testing the government's ability to get rebel leaders to cede command of their fighters.

Although rebels met a deadline imposed by the National Transitional Council (NTC) to withdraw this week from the capital Tripoli, militias led by rival commanders still guard key installations and checkpoints across the city.

The lack of a fully functioning army and police force, has given militias free rein to fight turf wars after the uprising that ended Gaddafi's 42-year dictatorship in August.

"The program aims at including the revolutionaries in many fields including defense," Osama al-Juwali, interim defense minister told a news conference also attended by interim interior minister Fawzi Abd al-All.

"The idea is to inject new blood in the army which was marginalized by the tyrant (Gaddafi)," said Juwali who was commander of the Zintan militia that captured Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam in November.

Abd al-All said the rebels were also invited to take up positions in the interior ministry which, he said, was understaffed. He said they could also apply for civilian jobs in government offices through the ministry of labor.

Lifting of the U.N. Security Council sanctions this month on Libya's central bank and a subsidiary means that the interim leaders have access to cash that could be used to offer the fighters well-paying government jobs.

Juwali said that part of the plan was to train the rebels to take up high-ranking positions in the military.

He said it would take a month to register and allocate them to the military, police and other civilian posts, and months before they were trained to guard borders and installations, including oilfields and refineries, now held by rival militias.

"Everyone is allowed to join the special forces, the navy and others," he said. Talks were being held with a number of countries to train rebels inside and outside Libya for the military, he said.

Gaddafi ignored the military, giving control to security militias led by either his sons or confidants.

Juwali said he was not concerned about occasional skirmishes among rebel factions and that he was continuously in contact with most of the rebel leaders.

"I am not worried about the revolutionaries," he told Reuters after the conference. "The revolutionaries ask me every day when can they hand in their weapons and ammunition, but I tell them to wait until we have the facilities to store them."

The latest major turf war broke out this month when armed men in the vehicles of Libya's new national army tried to take control of Tripoli's international airport from a powerful Zintan militia unit.

Report: Government deeper in red (Politico)

The Treasury Department quietly released the balance of the U.S. government?s checkbook the Friday before Christmas, in a year-end report that showed the country diving deeper into the red with net liabilities of $14.8 trillion.

The government?s biggest liabilities for 2011 included $10.2 trillion in federal debt securities held by the public and $5.8 trillion owed to federal employees and veterans.

The government?s overall net liability is calculated by subtracting net assets from liabilities. In 2010, the figure was $13.5 trillion.

The Government Accountability Office?s auditor?s report stated that it could not express an opinion on the government?s annual financial statements, citing serious financial management problems at the Defense Department that made the department?s statements impossible to audit, the government?s ?inability to adequately account for and reconcile intragovernemtntal activity,? as well as its ?ineffective process for preparing the consolidated financial statements.?

?Restoring fiscal sustainability will require substantial additional changes, including tax reforms to increase revenue and changes to make our entitlement programs sustainable over time,? Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said in a messaging accompanying the report.

He added, ?But these reforms, if done in a broad-based and balanced way and phased in over time to give Americans a chance to plan and adjust, will not impose an unfair or excessive burden on the citizens of this country.?

Some Russian protesters want revolution: Kremlin aide (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? The Kremlin's chief political strategist condemned Russian protesters on Friday, saying they wanted to turn demonstrations over a disputed election into a revolution like those that toppled leaders in the Arab world.

"There are those who want to turn the protests into a color revolution - that is for sure," the president's first deputy chief of staff, Vladislav Surkov, said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

Tens of thousands of people have said they will protest on Saturday in Moscow as part of the biggest wave of opposition rallies since Prime Minister Vladimir Putin rose to power 12 years ago.

Surkov said the protesters were acting as though they were taking cues from the works of U.S. academic Gene Sharp, whose books on revolution have been cited as a major influence on activists who led the campaign against Egypt's Hosni Mubarak.

Opposition leaders are calling for a new vote after accusations that the December 4 election, which gave Putin's ruling party a slim majority in the State Duma lower house of parliament, was riddled with voting violations.

In the short interview, Surkov echoed opinions from Putin that some protesters were being instructed from abroad and that those attending were carefully following a preformulated script.

"(Protesters) are acting by the book, following ... new revolutionary methods," said Surkov, referring to those who want to spark a revolution as 'crooks', a word often used by protesters to describe Putin's United Russia party.

As in demonstrations in North Africa and the Middle East, the Russian protesters have relied on social media and Internet sites to organize their rallies and boost their numbers.

"For as much as it's by the book, it's boring. You want to tell these gentlemen to distance themselves from the instructions, from fantasies," he said.

DEFUSE DISCONTENT

Surkov, who is a contentious figure for the opposition, said the Russian leadership had already started loosening its political control.

"(Changes) have already happened. The system has already changed ... We just have to put these changes into law," he said, one day after President Dmitry Medvedev outlined proposals for overhauling the political system such as allowing regional governors to be elected rather than appointed by the Kremlin.

Surkov, who had been working as acting Kremlin chief of staff, was passed over for the permanent position on Thursday when Putin ally Sergei Ivanov was chosen for the job.

The move may be a sign that Putin is trying to distance himself from the figure who has drawn criticism from protesters.

The Kremlin is keen to defuse discontent before the protests planned across Russia on Saturday, following an earlier day of protests by tens of thousands of people on December 10.

Following Medvedev's proposals to simplify the electoral system, a statement on the Kremlin website said legislation had been sent to parliament to enact them.

They include moves to reduce the number of signatures needed for a party to propose a presidential candidate and measures to simplify the process for political parties to compete in elections. The changes are to go into effect in January 1, 2013.

Surkov said the protests could bring "turbulence" to Russia, whose leaders cherish the stability they say Putin brought to the country after coming to power after the chaos that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

"The future is not a calm place, but it's not worth it to be afraid," Surkov said. "Turbulence, even strong turbulence is not a catastrophe, it is an (expression of) different kinds of stability."

How diving marine mammals manage decompression

ScienceDaily (Dec. 21, 2011) ? Any diver returning from ocean depths knows about the hazard of decompression sickness (DCS) or "the bends." As the diver ascends and the ocean pressure decreases, gases that were absorbed by the body during the dive, come out of solution and, if the ascent is too rapid, can cause bubbles to form in the body. DCS causes many symptoms, and its effects may vary from joint pain and rashes to paralysis and death.

But how do marine mammals, whose very survival depends on regular diving, manage to avoid DCS? Do they, indeed, avoid it?

In April 2010, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Marine Mammal Center (MMC) invited the world's experts in human diving and marine-mammal diving physiology to convene for a three-day workshop to discuss the issue of how marine mammals manage gas under pressure. Twenty-eight researchers discussed and debated the current state of knowledge on diving marine mammal gas kinetics -- the rates of the change in the concentration of gases in their bodies.

The workshop resulted in a paper, "Deadly diving? Physiological and behavioural management of decompression stress in diving mammals," which was published Dec. 21, 2011, online in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"Until recently the dogma was that marine mammals have anatomical and physiological and behavioral adaptations to make the bends not a problem," said MMC Director Michael Moore. "There is no evidence that marine mammals get the bends routinely, but a look at the most recent studies suggest that they are actively avoiding rather than simply not having issues with decompression."

Researchers began to question the conventional wisdom after examining beaked whales that had stranded on the Canary Islands in 2002. A necropsy of those animals turned up evidence of damage from gas bubbles. The animals had stranded after exposure to sonar from nearby naval exercises. This led scientists to think that diving marine mammals might deal with the presence of nitrogen bubbles more frequently than previously thought, and that the animals' response strategies might involve physiological trade-offs depending on situational variables. In other words, the animals likely manage their nitrogen load and probably have greater variation in their blood nitrogen levels than previously believed.

Because the animals spend so much time below the ocean's surface, understanding the behavior of diving marine mammals is quite challenging. The use of innovative technology is helping to advance the science. At WHOI, scientists have used a CT scanner to examine marine mammal cadavers at different pressures to better understand the behavior of gases in the lungs and "get some idea at what depth the anatomy is shut off from further pressure-kinetics issues," Moore said. For other studies, Moore and his colleagues were able to acquire a portable veterinary ultrasound unit to look at the presence or absence of gas in live, stranded dolphins.

There's still a lot to be learned, including whether live animals have circulating bubbles in their systems that they are managing. If they do, says Moore, noise impacts and other stressors that push the animal from a normal management situation to an abnormal situation become more of a concern. "When a human diver has some bubble issues, what will they do? They will either climb into a recompression chamber so that they can recompress and then come back more slowly, or they'll just grab another tank and go back down for a while and . . . and just let things sort themselves out. What does a dolphin do normally when it's surfaced? The next things to do is to dive, and the one place you can't do that is in shallow water or most particularly if you are beached."
