Sensational newspaper headlines about domestic violence in Alberta?have run globally in the past two weeks.??40 Per Cent of Men in Alberta Poll Say Women ?Put Themselves at Risk For Rape?.?? ?Survey finds nearly 10% of Alberta men OK with assault?.?

The telephone survey, conducted by Leger Marketing on behalf of the Alberta Council of Women?s Shelters (ACWS), polled 1,000 adult men in Alberta. They were asked for their views on violence against women, gender equity, perceptions of domestic violence, and the role men can play in reducing and preventing it.

Beyond the headlines mentioned above, some of the more disconcerting results found that over half of those polled agreed that ?a woman can leave a violent relationship if she really wants to? and that a quarter of them feel that domestic violence should not be considered a criminal offense, in certain instances.

?Answers make it clear that more education is needed but?also show a lot of progress. Of those 1,000 men:99% agree that men can make a difference in promoting respectful, non-violent relationships;

• 96% don?t believe it?s acceptable to hurt a woman who withholds sex;
• 95% feel concerned by violence against women and girls;
• 91% say they would intervene if they knew someone was in a violent relationship;
• and 56% say they are more aware of domestic violence issues than five years ago.

Asked?about prevention, most men agreed that speaking out against violence begins in the home.?Most understand their possible role?as change agents,?like educating? their sons and daughters about respectful and healthy relationships. They also see schools, celebrities, athletes and community leaders?as playing?a role in?the messaging.?

The results were released last week in Calgary at ACWS? annual ?Breakfast with the Guys? fundraiser, designed to encourage men and boys to take a stand against domestic violence. The breakfast featured a panel of experts from government, law enforcement, business, sport and social advocacy. The panel agreed that awareness and education are critical. Consumers tap savings, credit to boost spending

The daffodils are up, the job and housing markets are improving, businesses are more upbeat and consumers are getting back in a spending mood.

Unfortunately, American households are dipping into savings and tapping credit cards to pay for their latest shopping spree. Unless their paychecks begin expanding at the same pace, the new?spending, and the boost it's giving to the economy, may not be sustainable.

"While households want to spend and will raid their bank accounts to support that habit, unless income gains start improving consumption will have to slow," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Ecoomic Advisors.

After a long, slow recovery from the 2007 recession, consumers are feeling more upbeat about the economic outlook in 2012. Five years after the worst housing collapse since the Great Depression, home prices in many markets are beginning to stabilize and sales are perking up. The job market, though still very tight in?many industries and occupations, has been creating new openings at a healthy clip. The stock market is up nearly 30 percent in the past six months.

All of which?helped boost consumer confidence to its highest level in more than a year in March, according to the latest reading by Thomson Reuters and University of Michigan. The upbeat mood has been showing up in other consumer surveys.

It's also showing up in the data on consumer spending, which rose 0.8 percent, according to the Commerce Department. Spending on durable goods like cars and trucks rose sharply. January's spending was revised up to 0.4 percent from a previously reported 0.2 percent gain.

The spending gains have also helped boost wider optimism about the economy and has prompted some forecasters to lift their estimates for the pace of growth this year.

"So long as the consumer is spending, that's the biggie everyone is watching as they drive the economy," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial.

Not all of the spending boost came from increased confidence. Higher gasoline prices have forced households to shell out more at the pump even if their paychecks are able to stretch far enough to make up the difference. The energy component of the Commerce Department's spending data surged 3.6 percent last month, largely due to higher gasoline prices, which have jumped 62 percent so far this year.

?Some forecasters think the pain at the pump will get worse before it gets better.

"The bad news is that pump prices will start approaching the $4.15-$4.20 per gallon range by Memorial Day," said Chris Christopher, a senior economist at IHS Global Insight. "The good news is that a relatively stronger job and stock market are assisting in holding up consumer spending and confidence."

After several false starts, the job market seems to be gaining strength, adding nearly 250,000 jobs a month for the last three months, helping to bring the unemployment rate down?to 8.3 percent from 9.0 percent in September.

Some small business owners are report that they plan to hire this year. About a third of those surveyed by payroll processor Sure Payroll said they plan to take on more workers in 2012, with only two percent planning layoffs. The rest expect to keep staffing levels where they are. Nearly 80 percent of those polled said the pace of business met or exceeded their expectations in the first three months of this year.

The hope is that continued improvement in the job market will translate into higher wages, which would help sustain the recent pickup in spending. Until then, consumers are leaning on their savings and credit cards to pay for the spending increase. Personal income inched up just 0.2 percent last month;?disposable income, the amount left after taxes and inflation, fell for a second straight month,

That means dipping into savings and borrowing more. The savings rate, the amount of disposable income households have socked away, dropped to 3.7 percent, the lowest rate since August.

After steadily declining during the recession, the total level of revolving credit outstanding bottomed in May 2010 and is up 8.3 percent since them, according to the latest data from the Federal Reserve.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made clear Saturday that time is running out for diplomacy with Iran over its disputed nuclear program, saying Tehran's "window of opportunity" for a peaceful resolution "will not remain open forever."

She also expressed doubt about whether Iran has any intention of negotiating a solution that satisfies the U.S., Israel and other countries that believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran contends the program is solely for peaceful energy and research purposes.

Her remarks at a security conference in Saudi Arabia follow President Barack Obama's announcement Friday that the U.S. was moving ahead with penalties aimed at depriving Iran of oil revenue, while also working with Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states to ensure ample global petroleum supplies.

Clinton prodded Gulf governments to develop a coordinated defense strategy against Iranian missiles. With tensions rising in the region, she said American and Gulf militaries should cooperate to improve maritime security as well.

Underscoring the limits of U.S.-Gulf cooperation, however, U.S. officials confirmed Saturday that the United Arab Emirates had shut down an American-funded democracy group, following similar Emirates action against a German organization this past week.

Discussions also covered ways to pressure Syrian President Bashar Assad to end a year of bloodshed from the uprising against his rule, but the focus was on Iran.

"It soon will be clear whether Iran's leaders are prepared to have a serious, credible discussion about their nuclear program, whether they are ready to start building the basis of a resolution to this very serious problem," Clinton told reporters. "It is up to Iran whether they are ready to make the right choice. ... What is certain is that Iran's window of opportunity to seek and obtain a peaceful resolution will not remain open forever."

She said pressure from the economic penalties and international isolation was increasing on Iran to show it is serious about satisfying the world's concerns.

International negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program will resume in April in Turkey, she said. But skepticism persists over Iran's intentions.

Tehran has used past talks to delay sanctions or try to divide the international front, while pressing ahead with its nuclear program. Speculation over a possible U.S. or Israel military attack is adding urgency to the next round of discussions.

Obama has underlined the need to give time for diplomacy alongside penalties. He said Friday that the U.S. would move ahead with potential measures against U.S. allies and other countries that keep buying Iranian oil. It was the latest step in the campaign to starve Iran of money for its nuclear activity.

The president said the world oil market was tight, but deep enough to keep the squeeze on Iran.

Clinton, who met Friday for almost two hours with Saudi King Abdullah, said the U.S. and Saudi Arabia share an interest in ensuring stable energy markets that foster economic growth.

She recognized the kingdom's efforts to meet increased market demand for countries weaning themselves off Iranian petroleum imports. She also said the U.S. and Sunni governments of the region would cooperate to counter Iranian threats against shipping in the Gulf and Tehran's support for "the Assad regime's murderous campaign."

Before heading to Turkey for a 60-nation "Friends of the Syrian People" meeting Sunday, Clinton lamented what she called the Assad government's shelling of civilian neighborhoods and targeting of mosques and churches.

She said these attacks have continued despite Assad's acceptance of U.N. mediator Kofi Annan's plan to end the crisis. That plan includes an immediate cease-fire and an eventual democratic transition.

In a concluding statement, the U.S. and the other countries at Saturday's meeting urged Annan to issue a timeline for putting his plan in place.

The U.S. and other foes of Assad are struggling to settle on a strategy even as Annan's plan founders.

Western diplomats want to give diplomacy a chance, having invested months of effort to persuade Russia and China, veto-holding members of the U.N. Security Council, to unite behind a common approach. But they, like the Syrian opposition, fear Assad may only be playing for time.

Assad said he wants the plan to succeed, but insists the opposition must first commit to a cease-fire.

The West says the Syrian government must pull back its troops first, and U.S. officials say much of the diplomacy right now concerns the choreography of how the two sides would lay down their arms.

More than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's violence since last March, according to U.N. estimates.

Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are among the most impatient and have spoken about possible military intervention, from arming Syria's badly overmatched rebels to creating safe zones from which the rebels can operate.

Washington is asking them to hold off, fearing that a military escalation could lead to all-out civil war and play into Assad's hands, considering his vastly more powerful military.

Clinton said officials meeting in Turkey would discuss "additional steps to increase pressure on the regime, provide humanitarian assistance despite the efforts of the regime to block access and advance plans for an inclusive, democratic and orderly transition that addresses the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Clinton also expressed concern about increased pressure across the region on civic groups, in particular those advocating political or democratic reforms. It was an apparent reference to the Emirates' move this past week against the U.S.-based National Democratic Institute and Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Clinton underscored her disappointment in a private conversation Saturday with Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed, U.S. officials said. She urged authorities to reconsider the decision.

Spike Lee wasn't the first to retweet the erroneous address on Twitter blindly accepted by many as that of George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month. But the filmmaker's message -- sent last week to his 240,000 Twitter followers -- was the most viral.

Elaine McClain, 70, the owner of the misidentified house in Sanford, Florida, and her husband David McClain, 72, tell news outlets they're now "living in fear." The address spread on Twitter, accompanied by threats of violence, and the couple are now staying at a hotel "to avoid the spotlight and possible danger," reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Oh, and Mrs. McClain? She reportedly has a heart condition. Awesome.

So how did this happen? As The Smoking Gun breaks it down, Marcus Davonne Higgins, the 33-year-old Los Angeles man behind the bad address, confused McClain's son, George W. Zimmerman, who once lived at the address, with George Michael Zimmerman, the man who killed Martin. Higgins then blasted the address to the Twitter accounts of Will Smith, 50 Cent, LeBron James, as well as to Lee. But Lee is the only one who retweeted it.

The great big "WRONG!" here isn't the bad address, or whether Lee should research the info before he retweets. And as regrettable as it is, Lee can't be held accountable for giving conservative pundit Michelle Malkin more fuel for Trayvon Martin race baiting on her Twitter "news" site Twitchy. It's this: Celebrities have no business using their position of power and popularity on Twitter to incite a mob.

We decry it when members of 4chan's /b/board broadcast the phone number, address and other identifying info about young girls suddenly popular on the Internet. Here in the West, we're horrified by stories of China's Internet mob, "mobilized to root out, expose and shame people they perceive to be exhibiting corrupt or immoral behavior," sometimes resulting in real-world violence. It's equally not OK for U.S. celebrities to do the same.?

We saw this to a lesser degree last week when Alec Baldwin mustered a Twitter army against someone he claimed was harassing his girlfriend on the Internet. When a celebrity directs his fanatic legion against a person outside a position of power, that's straight-up bullying.

Posting on Twitter, Baldwin gave out the handle of the alleged?harasser, @scarfacemadam, whom he said "has entered the twitter-verse ONLY to harass my girlfriend" in a way "that is borderline threatening." He asked users to "go to her address and read just a few of her posts, and give her your notice of her behavior."

While many of the Twitter attacks against?@scarfacemadam didn't?compare to the jillions of ugly death threats tweeted by Justin Bieber fans on any given day, they weren't pretty. As we noted then,?if the troll harassing his GF really is as bad as he claimed, then it's way to fuel a psycho stalker, Alec Baldwin! Conversely, if the troll was just your run-of-the-mill Internet jerk (with or without diagnosable mental issues), then Baldwin just sent thousands of people in that troll's direction.?

As it turned out, the kerfuffle faded fast soon after the @scarfacemadam account went dormant. It could've been worse. It wasn't.

In Lee's case however, helping chum Twitter could've resulted in violence -- against an innocent elderly couple or a man yet to face the justice system -? as well as a jail sentence for any Lee fans who took his retweet to heart. ?

The Motorola Defy Mini (see the hands-on from CES) is available, starting today, in Brazil. It brings a water and dust resistant offering in the small range, checking in at just 3.2-inches with a 600MHz CPU. Running Andorid 2.3.6, the Defy Mini has 128MB of storage and 512MB of RAM, powered by a 1650mAh battery. Wrap the whole package up behind a Gorilla Glass screen , and you have a tough little phone for folks who need tough little phones.

Latest released two new versions of PlayStation Portable system are PSP Go and PSP 3000. PSP ? 3000, is a small handheld console with 4.3? LCD screen and high contrasts color ratio, built in Wi-Fi and microphones. Difference between the older version of PSP and new one PSP ? 3000 is that, it contains anti-reflection technology which helps the gamers to play in any conditions. And the other new generation of PlayStation Portable is PSP Go. PSP Go system is slim, light then it?s older version PSP and most important thing in PSP GO is that, UMD drive is gone now because this new device comes up in market with internal 16 GB hard drive. It also contains all of the features similar to PSP system like in ? built Bluetooth, impressive graphic power etc. And this system available in market in two colors i.e. PSP Go (Pearl White) and PSP Go (Piano White).

My solution has been not to look at myself in a three-way mirror from behind for the past 10 years. I have no idea what?s going on back there. I?ll share another secret with you: Be grateful you?re not complaining to me that your wife has turned into an elephant seal, one who won?t have sex with you. Almost every woman has cellulite, the degree to which is partially genetic. I grew up near where the Boston Marathon is run, and one gratifying thing about going to cheer on the participants was seeing that even some women who run marathons have cellulite. It would be a relief for both of you if instead of covering herself in shame your wife could joke, ?Do my thighs make you think of Pebble Beach?? But since she is uncomfortable about this, I think you should gently bring it up. Try not to mention the phrases ?turnoff? and ?deal killer.? Instead, say something like: ?Sweetheart, I get the feeling you?re self-conscious about your thighs. You shouldn?t be. I hope you know you look incredible.? You?ll notice I skipped over your suggestion for getting her treatment for this totally normal condition. That?s because while there are plenty of treatments available, there is no guaranteed safe and effective one. In the years you and your wife have been together, perhaps your own hairline and waistline have shifted. But she?s probably done you the favor of accepting that while you?ve inevitably changed, you still look good to her. Instead of trying to fix her, embracing her, thighs and all, might make her feel more comfortable about her body, and that should turn both of you on.

When most people look at sharks, they'd be hard-pressed to find any redeeming features. Many of them have ferocious jaws, sandpapery skin, and frightening senses that can zero in on their hidden prey. Their best assets, in other words, are threats to our existence.

But these predatory advantages hold the promise of engineering solutions that could help sustain ? rather rather than kill ? humans. Their hardened skin has inspired faster ships; their ability to detect weak vibrations underwater may eventually yield a better battery. The movie Jaws convinced us that sharks are unparalleled stalkers, but it failed to capture how these skills could apply to our daily existence.

Brown has extracted the material from dead sharks to gauge its thermal sensitivity, while Case Western Reserve University nanoengineering professor Alexis Abramson has explored developing a synthetic gel with similar thermoelectric properties that could be used to convert waste heat, from devices such as a car engine, into usable electricity.

Then there are sharks' denticles, otherwise known as "skin teeth", which cover their bodies. Made up of crowns covered with hard enamel, they reduce friction by forcing the water to flow in channels, allowing sharks to move swiftly through the water. The type of denticles a shark has depends on the species: Lighter denticles maximize a shark's speed while providing slightly less protection from a predatory attack. Basking sharks have crowns that point in all directions, while short-fin mako sharks ? some of the fastest swimmers in the sea ? have smaller, lighter denticles. They are as strong as steel and carry an added benefit: By minimizing water turbulence, they allow sharks to hunt better by moving through the sea in near silence.

Ralph Liedert, a researcher at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen, Germany, pioneered the idea of covering ships with artificial sharkskin to help them move smoothly by dramatically reducing biofouling (not to be confused with the more familiar biofueling). Biofouling, which occurs when barnacles, mussels, and algae latch onto ships, increases a vessel's drag resistance by as much as 15 percent. Liedert has produced an imitation sharkskin from elastic silicone that would reduce this fouling by 67 per cent, and he estimates that once a ship reached four to five knots, nearly all of these creatures would fly off the hull's surface.

Smelling in stereo

Researchers from Mote Marine Laboratory's Center for Shark Research are looking at other aspects of how sharks operate. Along with scientists at Boston University's marine program, they've learned that sharks hunt prey by sensing the differences when their smell hits each nostril ? they call it "smelling in stereo." In time, they hope to apply this steering algorithm to odour-guided robots that track oil plumes and chemical leaks underwater.
